Hair Loss In Women

Hair loss in women is more common than you may think. When it comes to hair loss, middle aged men suffering with male pattern baldness usually comes to mind, but women can also struggle with hair loss. By age fifty, eighty five percent of men show signs of significant hair loss while forty percent of women over the age of fifty also have noticeable hair loss, although age isn't always the key factor, thinning hair can also happen to younger women for many different reasons. Here is a list of common causes of hair loss in women.

Alopecia

Alopecia is a clinical name for hair loss anywhere on the body, from head to toe, temporary or permanent. Alopecia can be the result of heredity, hormonal changes, medical conditions or a normal part of aging. While hair loss on the scalp is most common in men, women can lose hair on their head too which is why Alopecia can be known as male or female pattern baldness.

Alopecia areata

Alopecia areata is a cause of hair loss that happens when the immune system attacks hair follicles. Hair follicles are the structures in skin that form hair. Alopecia areata can cause hair loss anywhere on the body but most commonly affects the hair follicles on the head and face.

Telogen effluvium

Telogen effluvium is a common cause of temporary hair loss. This type of hair loss in women is often due to a shock to the immune system. Childbirth, surgery, dieting, and medications are all common causes of this type of hair loss in women. While it's normal to lose up to around one hundred hairs daily, chronic telogen effluvium can present itself in otherwise healthy women thirty to sixty years of age.

Anagen effluvium

Anagen effluvium is a form of hair loss in women commonly associated with cancer treatments such as chemotherapy. During cancer treatments such as chemotherapy and radiation, anagen hairs suffer a toxic or inflammatory insult, resulting in fracture of the hair shaft. Exposure to chemicals such as thallium, boron, and arsenic are known causes of this type of hair loss in women.

Traction Alopecia

Traction alopecia is a form of hair loss caused by repetitive tension on the hair of the scalp. This type of hair loss in women often develops along the hairline due to prolonged wearing of tight ponytails and hair styles that involve continuous pulling on the roots of the hair. Some methods of applying hair extensions such as "weaves", dreadlocks, bums, tight braids, and cornrows can also cause hair loss in women and men.
